Keeper of The Lost Cities Book Review

Hi guys! I decided to do a book review, because, well, why not? Plus, it might encourage someone to read the book, and that’d be awesome!

Author: Shannon Messenger

Length: 496 pages

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Adventure

Publisher: Aladdin

Blurb:

“Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has a secret. She’s a Telepath – someone who hears the thoughts of everyone around her. It’s a talent she’s never known how to explain.

Everything changes the day she meets Fitz, a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and also reads minds. She discovers there’s a place she does belong, and that staying with her family will place her in grave danger. In the blink of an eye, Sophie is forced to leave behind everything and and start a new life in a place that is vastly different from anything she has ever known.

Sophie has new rules to learn and new skills to master, and not everyone is thrilled that she has come ‘home’. There are secrets buried deep in Sophie’s memory – secrets about who she really is and why she was hidden among humans – that other people desperately want. Would even kill for.

In this page-turning debut, Shannon Messenger creates a riveting story where one girl must figure out why she is the key to her brand-new world, before the wrong person finds the answer first.”

Oh my wow, this book is AMAZING from start to finish!

Alright, let me just say that once you start this book, it’s nearly impossible to put down. Right from the very beginning, the story drags you in, and there’s no real breaks where you kinda get bored. However, it’s not so fast that you can’t tell what’s going on. It’s perfect!

Dex was my favorite character, hands down, though his attitude (almost jealousy…?) towards Fitz and Biana got old quickly. Besides that, though, he’s just so awesome! I don’t really know how to explain it other than that, but he’s such a good friend to Sophie that it’s endearing (I kinda ship them a little, too…).

When Sophie left her family…. AAAAHHHH!!! I could hardly handle the feels! I don’t really have anything to say, but I cried for a little bit after that (yeah, I’m pretty emotional over books, hehe).

The plot twist at the end! I might just be really bad at predicting where a book is going, but this was a really good one! I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say that it would be hard to guess where the book was going unless you either read it in one sitting or just have a really good memory from the beginning.

Favorite Quotes:

“Fitz pulled her forward, and the warm tingling in her hand shot through her body-like a million feathers swelling underneath her skin, tickling her from the inside out.”

•••

“Across the river, a row of crystal castles glittered in the sunlight in a way that would make Walt Disney want to throw rocks at his ‘Magic Kingdom’.”

•••

“‘This is… magic?’

Fitz laughed-a full body laugh, like it was the funniest thing he’d ever heard.

She glared at him. It couldn’t be that funny.

‘No,’ he said when he’d regained control. ‘Magic is a stupid idea humans came up with to try to explain things they couldn’t understand.'”

•••

“‘That’s impossible.’

‘Is it?’

‘Yeah. You need infinite energy for light travel. Haven’t you heard the theory of relativity?’

She thought she had him stumped with that one, but he just laughed again. ‘That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.'”

Anyway, this book is one of the best I’ve read in a while!

I get to meet the author, Shannon Messenger, at a writing workshop I’m going to in May, and I’m super excited now! There’s book signing, so hopefully…? AAAHHH, that’d be AMAZING!!!

 It definitely deserves 5 stars!

P.S: I used the same format Suzy does her book reviews in, since I love it so much! Hopefully she doesn’t mind! (Also, I love her blog! Go check her out!)
